iPhone 12 Pro Max
A 6.7-inch Pro with a bigger sensor and sensor-shift stabilization.
Overview
The largest iPhone 12 introduced the first big camera update in a generation. Its main wide camera used a sensor that was about 47 percent larger, with bigger pixels that captured more light, and stabilization moved from the lens to the sensor itself, an approach borrowed from mirrorless cameras.
The telephoto lens stretched to 65mm for 2.5x optical zoom, and the LiDAR Scanner remained for low-light autofocus. The 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display was the biggest on an iPhone to date and showed content in Dolby Vision, while the body stayed manageable thanks to slim bezels.
As with the other Pro, the frame was stainless steel and the back was matte glass. Apple rated video playback at up to 20 hours, and the phone arrived in stores in November, about three weeks after the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro.
Why it mattered
Its sensor-shift stabilization and larger sensor set the pattern for the Pro Max as the camera flagship.
