iPhone 6
A rounded 4.7-inch redesign that introduced Apple Pay.
Overview
Apple answered the large-phone trend with the iPhone 6, a model with a 4.7-inch display and softly curved glass that melted into a rounded aluminum edge. At 6.9 mm it was the thinnest iPhone so far, and the camera lens bulged slightly from the back to make that possible.
The A8 chip, paired with an M8 motion coprocessor, improved both speed and efficiency, and the Retina HD screen used dual-domain pixels for wider viewing angles. The camera added focus pixels for faster autofocus, 240 fps slow-motion video and 1080p at 60 fps.
NFC hardware enabled Apple Pay, a tap-to-pay system that tied into Touch ID. The phone also supported VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling, and faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi. A 64GB model and a new 128GB tier replaced the old 32GB option, with the 16GB model at $649 unlocked or $199 on contract.
Why it mattered
It marked Apple's move to larger screens and started the best-selling iPhone generation to that point.
