iBook G3 (14-inch)
A bigger iBook with a 14.1-inch screen and Mac OS X as an option.
Overview
In October 2001 Apple added a 14.1-inch iBook to the range, running a 600 MHz G3 with 128 MB of memory. The screen kept the 1024 by 768 resolution but spread it over a larger panel, which suited presentations and classroom use.
It weighed about 2.7 kg and shipped with both Mac OS 9.2.1 and Mac OS X 10.1 installed, giving users a gentle path into the new operating system. Storage was 15 GB or 20 GB, depending on the configuration.
A May 2002 update raised the speed to 800 MHz, and the family then moved to the G4 processor, but this model established the larger-screen iBook.
Why it mattered
Gave the iBook a larger display option and encouraged mainstream adoption of Mac OS X.
