iMac G3 (Summer 2000)
The iMac breaks the $800 barrier with a new Indigo entry model.
Overview
In July 2000 the iMac line widened. A cost-reduced Indigo model with a 350 MHz G3 and no FireWire started at $799, while higher models added CD-RW or DVD-ROM drives and FireWire. The DV Special Edition ran a 500 MHz processor in Snow.
All used a 15-inch CRT, ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics and PC100 memory with Mac OS 9.0.4. The cases kept the same slimmer shape introduced a year earlier, and the Sage and Ruby colors continued from the previous line.
This was the last big revision before the iMac turned to flowers and dalmatians in 2001, and its low entry price helped sustain sales as the dot-com economy cooled.
Why it mattered
It made the iMac affordable at $799 and rounded out the CRT iMac family.
