Apple says Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV is getting a sound upgrade this weekend. According to the company, the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, will be the first F1 race broadcast in Dolby Atmos, adding spatial audio to the Dolby Vision picture that subscribers already have.

What changes

Apple describes the Atmos mix as placing viewers inside the race weekend, with team radio, commentary, engine noise and pit-lane sound arriving from around the room. Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision for F1 are available through the Apple TV app on supported Apple devices, and on compatible Dolby-enabled TVs, soundbars and home theater systems. Apple has not said which specific models qualify beyond that description.

Multiview reaches smart TVs

A second change affects how fans follow the action. Multiview, which puts up to four live feeds on one screen, now also works on supported smart TVs, in addition to Apple devices and streaming players. Apple says the U.S. Grand Prix coverage includes up to 30 additional live feeds across sessions, among them a Driver Tracker offering a bird's-eye view, session timing and data feeds, a mixed onboard feed that switches cameras automatically, and a Podium feed that follows whoever is running in the top three.

Coverage includes English and Spanish commentary, and every session is available live and on demand to subscribers in the U.S., where Apple TV is the exclusive home of F1.

Championship context

Apple frames the weekend around the title race as the season enters its final stretch. It notes that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has a chance to clinch his first Drivers' Championship in Austin, which would make him the youngest champion in the sport's history.

Original programming

Apple's companion shows also return for the race. Circuits in Focus, a track preview series with 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg and creator and driver Emelia Hartford, uses the EA Sports F1 25 video game to walk through the Austin circuit's corners, elevation changes and overtaking spots. The Full Throttle series is also returning with a new episode, according to Apple.

The U.S. Grand Prix weekend runs from October 23 to 25. MacRumors was among the outlets to report the Dolby Atmos addition earlier on Thursday, and Apple's own newsroom post is the primary source for the details above.
