Apple's display engineering group is going through a leadership handover, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his Sunday newsletter, as relayed by MacRumors, Gurman reports that Victor Yin now oversees much of Apple's display development, following years of groundwork under veterans Wei Chen and John Zhong.

Two long-serving leaders move to advisory roles

Chen and Zhong each have roughly 30 years at the company. Gurman says both are shifting into more limited adviser roles, and he describes their eventual departures as the end of a succession process that has been running for several years rather than a sudden exit. The report does not spell out their previous titles.

Other promotions this month

The newsletter also points to a batch of October promotions to vice president. Rajesh Ambati, Louie Sanguinetti and Derek Shaeffer, whose work spans connectivity hardware and software, were all elevated. Carson Oliver, who leads the App Store, received a VP title, and Steve Smith was put in charge of corporate development. Some of those appointments were covered in an earlier Bloomberg report dated October 8.

A wider reshuffle of hardware leadership

The changes sit within a broader reorganization. In April, Johny Srouji's remit was expanded to chief hardware officer, covering hardware engineering and hardware technologies. A May reorganization of product development was meant to improve coordination between the teams that design chips and those that build devices.

Gurman adds that some hardware program managers were recently laid off as Srouji and CEO John Ternus strip out layers of management. That fits earlier reporting that Ternus wants to speed up product development and shorten the distance between engineers and senior executives.

Why it matters

Display technology is central to Apple's near-term roadmap. Rumors cited by Bloomberg point to OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro models and an OLED iPad mini arriving this week, and Gurman separately says OLED versions of the MacBook Air and iMac are still being tested. Apple has not commented publicly on the personnel changes, and the details here come solely from Gurman's reporting, so they remain unconfirmed by the company.
