Rumor. This story is based on unconfirmed reports. Details may change before anything is announced.

Apple may be preparing to make Siri behave less like an assistant that answers questions and more like an agent that works toward goals on its own, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The claim is a rumor: Apple has not announced or confirmed any such plan.

In his Power On newsletter on Sunday, Gurman wrote that he has been told Apple ultimately wants to move in this direction. He said he believes the company could make Siri "more like an agent" as early as next year, though he noted that the exact implementation remains unclear if the plan goes ahead.

Gurman framed the idea by pointing to a new class of AI products. Agents such as OpenAI's Dots, Meta's Muse and xAI's Grok, he said, can keep track of goals, work out what needs to happen next and keep pursuing an objective without the user prompting every individual step. That is a step beyond the current Siri AI, which, as MacRumors describes it, is far more capable and personalized than the classic Siri but is not a proactive, always-on agent.

The report also points to pressure inside Apple to move faster on software. Gurman said that in a closed-door meeting in recent weeks, Apple CEO John Ternus told software engineering chief Craig Federighi that the company needs to "accelerate" its software roadmap and "move quickly beyond merely making necessary improvements to Siri."

That fits with another Bloomberg report this weekend, which we covered, describing a reworked development schedule for iOS 28 and macOS 28 with a short coding window followed by a brief integration period. Taken together, the reports suggest Apple is looking at both how quickly it ships software and how ambitious its assistant becomes.

There are important caveats. Gurman's description rests on unnamed sources and his own assessment of what Apple could do, not on any Apple statement. The report gives no feature list, no software version and no firm release timing beyond "as early as next year," and plans of this kind can change or be dropped before launch.

For now, nothing about Siri's behavior changes. Apple typically introduces major software and Siri changes at its developer conference in the summer, and any agent-style capabilities would most likely surface there if they materialize. Until Apple says otherwise, treat this as an early rumor about the company's direction rather than a confirmed roadmap.
