Apple's 27.2 software cycle reached release-candidate stage on Monday, and the build for the home lineup appears to be carrying more than the new hardware. According to MacRumors, HomePod software 27.2 extends the Sound Glow light effect, which debuted on the HomePod mini 2, to older HomePod and HomePod mini models, while the tvOS 27.2 release candidate lays groundwork for a wireless surround-sound setup built around HomePods.

What Sound Glow does

Apple describes Sound Glow on the HomePod mini 2 as a light display on top of the speaker that glows and pulses with the music, reacting to bass and treble in real time. Colors are matched to the album artwork shown in Now Playing, so the look changes from song to song. Users can also pick a soundscape, such as rain, to trigger calmer animations. Apple says voice control of Sound Glow needs an iPhone with Apple Intelligence running the latest software.

MacRumors reports that the HomePod 27.2 update brings the effect to existing models. Apple's own announcement page for the HomePod mini 2 only confirms that the new speaker is compatible with HomePod software 27.2, so the exact list of older devices that will get the feature should be checked against Apple's release notes once the update ships.

Surround sound groundwork in tvOS 27.2

MacRumors also says the tvOS 27.2 release candidate points to support for four-speaker surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K and compatible HomePod models. The feature was first spotted in earlier tvOS 27.2 betas. 9to5Mac reported in September that the early implementation used two full-size HomePods and two HomePod minis, played identical audio from both pairs rather than assigning front and rear roles, and kept menu and game audio on the front speakers only. The outlet noted that Atmos and surround content from video sources worked, and FlatpanelsHD called the feature not yet fully baked at that stage.

Android Headlines, citing 9to5Mac, adds that HomePod software 27.2 may let users set a HomePod as a Mac's default audio output rather than just streaming over AirPlay, with a Mac supporting Wi-Fi 6E or later. Apple has not confirmed that detail.

Timing

Apple seeded release candidates for iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2 and visionOS 27.2 to developers on October 19. Release candidates are typically close to the final build, and MacRumors expects a public release soon. Apple has not announced a date. The iOS 27.2 cycle also adds Siri AI in additional languages, including French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, according to MacRumors' earlier beta coverage.
