Apple's new 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip does not deliver the same memory bandwidth across all of its memory options, according to the technical specifications Apple has published.
What the spec page lists
Apple's tech specs page for the M6 14-inch MacBook Pro gives 153GB/s of memory bandwidth for the 16GB configuration. The 24GB and 32GB configurations are listed at 170GB/s. In other words, the faster figure only applies once a buyer steps up from the base amount of unified memory.
MacRumors, which first drew attention to the split, notes that the 16GB model's 153GB/s matches the figure for the M5 version of the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The 24GB and 32GB models are therefore the ones that see a bandwidth increase over last generation's machine.
How it compares
For context, MacRumors points to the higher-end M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models, which are listed at 307GB/s and up to 614GB/s respectively. Those chips sit in a different part of the lineup, so the M6 figures are not a like-for-like comparison, but they show how much headroom Apple's more expensive chips offer for memory-heavy work.
What it means for buyers
Memory bandwidth describes how quickly the chip can move data in and out of unified memory, and it can matter for tasks such as large video projects, on-device machine learning and graphics work. Apple has not said how the difference translates into real-world performance, and independent benchmarks of the M6 machines are not yet available, so it is too early to say how noticeable the gap between 153GB/s and 170GB/s will be in everyday use.
Apple also lists SSD options of 1TB, 2TB and 4TB on the same page, with usable capacity somewhat lower than the labeled sizes, as is standard on Apple's spec sheets.
According to MacRumors, pre-orders for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 begin Wednesday, with availability from November 6. Buyers who care about the faster memory subsystem should check which memory configuration they are selecting at checkout, since the base 16GB option does not include it.
