Apple's new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K will be able to play sound through four HomePod speakers at once in a mode called Whole Room Audio, according to a MacRumors report published on October 20.

Apple describes the feature as spreading sound evenly across four HomePod speakers, an arrangement aimed at parties or game days when people are not all sitting in front of the television.

How it reportedly works

The technical details come from a developer known as "pdfu," who examined Apple's tvOS 27.2 code and shared the findings on X on October 19. They are not an official Apple description. According to that analysis, Whole Room Audio appears as a Speaker Mode option alongside the existing Surround Sound setting. Because both speaker pairs carry stereo channels, there are no extra audio settings to adjust.

Channels are reportedly assigned diagonally. The front-left and rear-right speakers share the left channel, while the front-right and rear-left speakers share the right channel. The idea is that the mix stays consistent wherever a listener stands or faces. Earlier rumors had referred to the feature as "Party Mode."

What you will need

MacRumors says the feature requires the new Apple TV 4K plus four HomePod speakers. The speakers can be four HomePod mini 2 units, or a mix of HomePod mini 2 and full-size HomePod 2, as long as the front pair and the rear pair match. Earlier Apple TV 4K models continue to support only two HomePods, in a stereo pair.

Availability

Per the report, the new Apple TV 4K launches on Friday, November 13, 2026, and the HomePod mini 2 arrives on Friday, October 30. Pre-orders for both are open.

MacRumors did not link to an Apple page describing the feature, so the quoted Apple wording is as relayed by the outlet, and the code-based details should be treated as preliminary until Apple publishes documentation. The tvOS 27.2 release candidate is already in testing, which is where the references surfaced.
