iPad Air (4th generation)
The Air goes all-screen, with Touch ID in the power button and five colors.
Overview
The iPad Air 4 borrowed the Pro's industrial design for a mid-range tablet. Narrow, even bezels and a flat aluminum frame replaced the old home-button layout, and the screen grew to 10.9 inches while the body shrank to the footprint of the earlier 10.5-inch model.
Without space for a home button, Apple embedded Touch ID into the top button, a first for any Apple device. The A14 Bionic was built on a 5-nanometer process and delivered a sizable performance uplift over the A12. USB-C replaced Lightning, and the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) clipped magnetically to the side for charging.
Five anodized colors made the Air the most colorful iPad in years: silver, space gray, rose gold, green and sky blue. It also supported Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio, which gave it nearly the same accessory ecosystem as the Pro.
Why it mattered
Brought the all-screen Pro design to a mid-range price and introduced Touch ID in the top button.
