iPhone XR
A colorful, lower-priced Face ID iPhone with a 6.1-inch LCD.
Overview
The XR was positioned as the accessible member of the 2018 lineup. It had a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD, a technology Apple used to squeeze a rounded-corner full-screen display onto cheaper LCD hardware. The lower resolution of 1792 by 828 still looked sharp at normal viewing distance.
An aluminum band and glass back replaced the stainless steel of the XS, and paint colors included blue, coral, yellow, white, black and (PRODUCT)RED. It shared the A12 Bionic and Face ID with the other 2018 models, though it had a single 12-megapixel rear camera and used software for Portrait mode, and it did not support 3D Touch, using Haptic Touch instead.
Battery life was the strongest of the lineup at up to 16 hours of video. It started at $749 and became one of the best-selling iPhones of its generation.
Why it mattered
It proved that a more affordable Face ID phone could sell in huge volumes, a template for the later iPhone 11 and 12.
