Mac Studio (2022)
A small aluminum workstation built around M1 Max and the new M1 Ultra.
Overview
The Mac Studio launched in March 2022 alongside the Studio Display. It filled the gap between the Mac mini and the Mac Pro with a machine twice the height of the mini, whose body held a large copper thermal module and a power supply.
The M1 Max version had a 10-core CPU and a 24 or 32-core GPU, up to 64 GB of memory and 8 TB of storage. The new M1 Ultra fused two M1 Max dies with a packaging technology called UltraFusion for a 20-core CPU, up to a 64-core GPU and up to 128 GB of memory.
The front carried an SDXC card slot and two USB-C ports, which were Thunderbolt 4 on the Ultra. The back offered four Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, HDMI, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and a headphone jack, and the unit supported up to five displays.
Why it mattered
It defined the compact Apple silicon workstation and replaced the iMac Pro and the 27-inch iMac for many professionals.
