Apple is reportedly adjusting macOS Golden Gate so it works with fingers as well as a trackpad, a change that would pair with the touchscreen MacBook Pro Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says is due this week. The details come from Gurman's Sunday "Power On" newsletter, as relayed by AppleInsider. Apple has not announced any of it.

A dynamic interface

According to the report, the operating system will adapt to the way the person last interacted with it. If the most recent input came from the touchscreen, controls would be presented in a form suited to touch. If the person last used the trackpad, the familiar pointer-based layout would remain. The stated goal is to let users move between the two without having to think about it.

One example described in the report is tapping a button and having its menu open close to the finger, so that options can be chosen quickly without reaching across the display. The Dock and the Menu Bar are also said to be getting touch-oriented tweaks.

Hints in beta code

AppleInsider notes that macOS 27.2 betas seeded in early October already contained references to touch gestures, touch-based dragging and what looked like a "touch sentinel recognizer." The outlet cautions that those strings could point to the touchscreen MacBook Pro, but could just as easily relate to improvements for Sidecar, which lets an iPad act as a second display for a Mac. They are not confirmation of a touch-capable Mac.

What it would mean for the MacBook Pro

Gurman has separately reported that Apple will unveil 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens and a Dynamic Island at an event on Wednesday, and that they may cost significantly more than current models. If accurate, the software work described here would be the other half of that change: a Mac whose interface has to respect both a cursor and a fingertip.

Apple has not said whether any touch features will ship with macOS Golden Gate at launch or arrive later, and the report does not give a release schedule for them. Apple has confirmed a media event in Los Angeles on October 28, so more detail could emerge within days.

As with all reports based on unnamed plans, the specifics may change before anything is announced. Cupertino News will update coverage if Apple confirms any of these touch changes.
