Apple has introduced a new MacBook Pro with what it calls a PROLED XDR Display, a tandem OLED panel that also makes this the first Mac with a touchscreen. According to Apple's press release, pre-orders start today, October 28, with the first deliveries arriving on Friday, November 6.
Display and touch
Apple says the PROLED XDR panel stacks two self-illuminating pixel layers, reaching up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness for both HDR and SDR content, with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. ProMotion adaptive refresh runs from 10Hz to 120Hz. The company also lists wide color support covering P3 and Adobe RGB in a single default preset, factory calibration, reference modes and DICOM presets for nondiagnostic use. An antireflective coating is standard, and an optional nano-texture glass is available.
The touch sensor is built into the display panel itself rather than layered on top, according to Apple. The company says it redesigned the hinge for stability when touching the screen and added video stabilization for the camera feed during touch use on calls. Apple says its own apps are optimized for touch, many existing apps work immediately, and developers get new gesture APIs. The Dynamic Island also comes to the Mac, serving as a home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI.
Chips, size and battery
The laptops come in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. Apple says the 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, about half a pound less than before, while the 16-inch weighs 4 pounds, 0.7 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of battery life based on its September 2026 testing, and fast charging to 50 percent in 30 minutes.
Ports include three Thunderbolt 5 connections, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 come from Apple's N1 chip, and the system runs macOS 27 Golden Gate.
Pricing
In the U.S., Apple lists the 14-inch M5 Pro at $2,899 and the 16-inch M5 Pro at $3,399. The 14-inch M5 Max starts at $4,499 and the 16-inch M5 Max at $4,799. Education pricing starts at $2,749 for the 14-inch M5 Pro.
Apple's senior hardware executive Johny Srouji described PROLED XDR as the world's best laptop display, a claim that reflects Apple's own positioning rather than independent testing.
