General Motors has begun rolling out Apple Wallet car key support in select Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles, according to a GM press release dated September 23 that MacRumors says it only noticed on Monday. The same digital key also works with Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, and availability covers the United States and Canada.

Which vehicles, and when

GM's schedule has two waves. Support is arriving now, across September and October, for the 2027 Cadillac Vistiq, the 2026 and 2027 Cadillac Optiq, and the 2025 through 2027 Cadillac Lyriq. A second group is listed for December: the 2027 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade IQ/IQL, the 2026 and 2027 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, and the 2026 and 2027 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. GM says more models will follow.

Owners should see a notice in the "What's New" section of their vehicle's mobile app once digital key support becomes available for their car.

What the key can do

According to the report, the phone or watch unlocks the vehicle as the owner approaches and locks it again on walking away. Authentication relies on ultra-wideband along with Bluetooth. From the Wallet app, drivers can also open the trunk and switch the climate control on or off.

The feature requires an iPhone 11 or later, with the second- and third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 16e excluded, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later.

How to set it up

Owners download the vehicle's mobile app and sign in. In an OnStar-connected GM vehicle, with the physical key fob nearby, the app walks through adding the digital key to the wallet. Apple's support page on car keys in Wallet explains the general process and advises customers to check with the manufacturer or a dealership about compatibility.

Why it matters

GM has been one of the larger automakers without Apple Wallet key support. Backend code pointing to the feature was spotted in October 2025, and GM confirmed its plans that December. The September release now puts specific models and dates on that promise, though the December group is still a schedule rather than a shipped feature. Apple itself has not issued a separate announcement about the GM rollout.
