Security researchers say they have jailbroken the iPhone Duo within hours of its release, according to a report from MacRumors citing the German outlet Heise.
The group, a security firm called Calif, showed an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1 with its home screen icons and widgets moved around and an anime character added to the display. Stefan Esser, a researcher speaking to Heise, said the team had achieved the result on launch day. The MacRumors report does not say which chip the device uses or detail the exploit chain used on the Duo.
Earlier work on the iPhone 18 Pro
The demonstration follows work Calif published the week before. The team posted videos of an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0.1, in which the phone rebooted and still had root access afterward. Esser told Heise that the exploit relied on vulnerabilities Calif has already disclosed to Apple or plans to disclose, and that most of them are fixed in the upcoming iOS 27.2. He also said AI tools helped in developing the jailbreak, without explaining how.
No public tool planned
Calif has not released the jailbreak. According to Esser, there will be no tool for ordinary users, although a proof-of-concept could be published later. That means owners of the new foldable are unlikely to be able to jailbreak their devices in the near term.
MacRumors says its report did not include a statement from Apple. The company typically patches disclosed vulnerabilities in software updates, and iOS 27.2 is currently in release-candidate testing, with Apple having seeded it to developers earlier this week.
Why it matters
Jailbreaks of a brand-new device on launch day are a reminder that security researchers pay close attention to new hardware, and that fixes often arrive in the first point updates. For now, the practical advice for iPhone Duo owners is the usual one: install software updates when they are released.
The iPhone Duo went on sale on Friday, October 23. Our earlier coverage looked at reports of screens cracking along the hinge and at the iOS 27.1 build released for the device only.
