Apple is capping U.S. iPhone Duo purchases at two units per customer, MacRumors reported on Monday, October 19.

According to the report, trying to order more than two phones through Apple's website or the Apple Store app brings up a notice reading that a maximum of two iPhone Duo can be purchased per customer. The U.S. store does not show the restriction up front. It only appears once a shopper tries to add a third Duo to the cart.

Apple has been more explicit elsewhere. MacRumors notes that two-per-customer limits were already listed in advance in China, Singapore and Hong Kong, so the U.S. cap brings the American store closer to those markets.

Several questions remain open. MacRumors says it could not confirm whether the limit was active when pre-orders opened on October 16. Some Reddit users describe the cap as new, while others claim they managed to buy four units, so the accounts conflict. The report does not say how long the limit will apply, why Apple introduced it, or whether it extends to retail stores. It also does not say whether any other model is affected.

The cap lands amid tight supply. Launch-day stock for the iPhone Duo sold out within minutes of pre-orders going live, and many buyers were quoted November or December delivery dates. Earlier reports on iPhone Duo pre-orders reselling on eBay for high prices have raised the question of bulk buying, though the MacRumors report does not link the limit to resale.

There is some good news for early buyers. Apple has begun moving up estimated delivery dates for some pre-orders in the U.S. and Japan by several weeks, so some customers may receive their phones sooner than first quoted.

The iPhone Duo is scheduled to go on sale on October 23. Apple has also said that in Japan and South Korea, launch-day sales of the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be limited to customers with pickup reservations.

For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: anyone hoping to order more than two, for family members or otherwise, will likely need to look at separate accounts or wait for supply to ease. Apple has not commented publicly on the U.S. limit in the MacRumors report, and the company's order terms on its store remain the authoritative reference.
