Instagram has brought its Edits video editing app to the Mac, MacRumors reports, giving creators a desktop option for projects that are awkward to finish on a phone.

According to the report, Edits for Mac is aimed at larger projects that benefit from a big display and the precision of a mouse and keyboard. The app offers a full multi-track timeline, keyframes for building transitions, and detailed audio waveforms intended to make cuts more accurate. Instagram says splitting, cutting and trimming clips are easier on the Mac than on mobile.

What the app includes

Edits for Mac carries over Instagram's licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, along with sound and video effects and unlimited automatic captions. Users can import their own LUTs and font files. The app also supports Model Context Protocol, which lets AI agents work with it.

Projects can be set up in several horizontal and vertical aspect ratios. Finished videos can be published directly to Instagram or downloaded and shared elsewhere, and the app offers 4K export without a watermark.

Availability

MacRumors says Edits for Mac can be downloaded from Instagram's website, so it is not distributed through the Mac App Store, according to that report. The launch comes the same week Apple's new MacBook Pro and iMac models reach customers, though the two are unrelated: Edits is a Meta-owned Instagram product rather than an Apple release.

The Mac version puts Instagram's editor alongside the long-established desktop video tools creators already use, with the draw being tight integration with Instagram's own audio library and publishing flow. Instagram has not been quoted here on pricing or system requirements, and neither detail was included in MacRumors' summary, so readers should check Instagram's download page for compatibility before installing.

For Mac users who produce short-form video, the practical change is simple: editing that previously meant working on a small touchscreen can now happen on a larger display with a full timeline.
