iPhone 14
Crash Detection, satellite SOS and a stronger camera, same A15 chip.
Overview
The iPhone 14 was a cautious update on the surface, reusing the iPhone 13's design and A15 Bionic chip, though this version had a fifth GPU core and 6GB of memory. The headline additions were about safety rather than speed.
Crash Detection used a new accelerometer and gyroscope to sense a severe car accident and call emergency services if the user did not respond. Emergency SOS via satellite let people send a message to responders from places without cell coverage, a feature that rolled out in the US and Canada in November and later expanded to other countries.
Camera improvements included a larger main sensor, an autofocusing front camera and a processing pipeline called the Photonic Engine that improved low-light photos. Action mode stabilized shaky handheld video. In the US the phone dropped the SIM tray entirely and supported only eSIM, a first for iPhones.
Why it mattered
It put crash detection and satellite emergency messaging on the mainstream iPhone and began the US move to eSIM-only phones.
