The Dynamic Island, an always-on display and a 48MP camera.
Overview
The 14 Pro changed how iPhones looked and worked more than any model since the iPhone X. The notch was replaced by a pill-shaped cutout that software could turn into an interactive area, called the Dynamic Island, which showed live activity such as music, timers and navigation as it expanded and contracted.
The LTPO display could drop to one hertz for an always-on lock screen, and peak outdoor brightness rose to 2,000 nits. The A16 Bionic chip was built on an improved 4-nanometer process and was paired with 6GB of RAM.
A 48-megapixel main camera was the first resolution jump for the iPhone's camera in years. It had a larger sensor and combined four pixels into one for 12-megapixel images with exceptional light gathering, and offered 48-megapixel ProRAW. A 2x crop from the sensor acted as an extra focal length, alongside the 3x telephoto and ultra wide lens. Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection were also included.
Why it mattered
The Dynamic Island turned a hardware cutout into a software feature and the 48MP sensor opened a new era of iPhone photography.
