Mac mini (M4, 2024)
Half the footprint: a 5-inch aluminum cube with M4 and M4 Pro.
Overview
The 2024 Mac mini was the first major redesign since 2010. The aluminum case shrank from 7.7 to 5 inches square and about two inches high, drawing air through a vent in the base and around the back; it weighed only 1.5 pounds.
Two USB-C ports and a headphone jack moved to the front, while the back carried three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet with a 10 Gigabit option. The M4 version had a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16 GB of memory as standard and Thunderbolt 4. The M4 Pro had up to a 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, up to 64 GB of memory and Thunderbolt 5.
Storage is modular, but with proprietary parts, so it is not user-replaceable. The mini supported up to three displays, and Apple promoted it as the first carbon-neutral Mac.
Why it mattered
It shrank the Mac mini to the size of a large coaster while raising the starting memory to 16 GB.
