Mac mini (Mid 2007)
Core 2 Duo power in the same small white box.
Overview
In August 2007 Apple replaced the Core Duo Mac mini with a version using Core 2 Duo processors, at 1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz. The design and ports were the same as the earlier Intel mini, but base memory was 1 GB and drives started at 80 GB.
The Intel GMA 950 graphics chip stayed, still sharing main memory, which limited gaming and 3D work. The CPU was socketed, which let hobbyists upgrade to faster Core 2 Duo chips, something the soldered models after 2009 never allowed.
It shipped with Tiger and ran Leopard once that arrived, supporting the Front Row media player with the included remote.
Why it mattered
It kept the mini current at the same $599 price and was the last model with a user-swappable processor.
