iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation)
The big Pro gains ProMotion, a faster chip and a better camera.
Overview
The second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro was an evolutionary upgrade over the original, but the changes made day-to-day use feel noticeably smoother. The display now refreshed at up to 120 Hz and was brighter at 600 nits, with wide color and True Tone.
The A10X Fusion chip delivered about 30 percent faster CPU performance than the A9X, and its six cores helped with video export and heavy multitasking under iOS 11. Storage tiers began at 64 GB instead of 32 GB.
The camera was brought in line with the iPhone-class hardware of the day, a 12-megapixel sensor with optical stabilization, and the front camera grew to 7 megapixels. The body kept the bezels, four speakers and Smart Connector of the first generation, and was sold in four finishes including rose gold.
Why it mattered
Together with the 10.5-inch model, it made iOS 11's iPad-specific features worthwhile with ProMotion-fast pen input.
