MacBook Pro (17-inch, 2006)
The widescreen flagship went Intel with a 1680 by 1050 display.
Overview
Three months after the 15-inch debut, the 17-inch MacBook Pro brought a larger screen to the Intel lineup. It used a 2.16 GHz Core Duo chip, 512 MB of memory and a Radeon X1600 graphics chip with 256 MB of video memory.
The display offered 1680 by 1050 pixels, the highest resolution in an Apple laptop of the time. It added FireWire 800 back to the port list along with FireWire 400, and still had an ExpressCard slot and an optical drive that supported dual-layer DVDs.
Weighing around 6.8 pounds, it was a desktop replacement for editors and designers, and later Core 2 Duo revisions stayed in the line until the unibody redesign.
Why it mattered
Put a wide, high-resolution display and FireWire 800 into the Intel MacBook Pro line.
